Southampton have offered £6million for Bournemouth right-back Max Aarons and are pushing to sign Swansea defender Nathan Wood.

Saints had been keen on signing Aaron last summer until the Cherries swooped in and signed him from Norwich for £7m

Aarons, 24, made 23 appearances for Bournemouth last season and has a good haul of experience in the Premier League and Championship considering his age.

Southampton boss Russell Martin, who saw they to Championship play-off victory over Leeds United in May, was captain of Norwich while Aarons was emerging at Carrow Road.

Meanwhile, Martin is an admirer of Swansea centre-back Wood, 22.

Wood has been on the books in Wales for two years but a back injury for several months last season limited his playing time.

Last summer Southampton made two approaches for him but had a £10m bid rejected.

Swansea exercised a one-year extension to his contract by a year in April, with his original one running out this summer.

This summer, Southampton have already signed Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who featured in their promotion campaign, for £23m from Manchester City.

They have also signed Adam Lallana from Brighton, bringing him back to where he started his career; Charlie Taylor from Burnley; and Rento Takaoka on a free transfer from Japanese club Nissho Gakuen.
