Former Cal Forward Set For First Olympic Games

BERKELEY – Ifeoma Onumonu, a former member of the California women’s soccer team, has been named as an alternate for the Nigerian National Team ahead of the Paris Olympic Games, the organization announced Wednesday.

This will be the first Olympic experience for Onumonu, who was called up to the senior team in 2021. The Golden Bear alumna has 14 caps and a pair of goals in her international career and was named to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup roster. This will be the Super Falcons’ fourth Olympic Games and first since 2008.

A three-time All-Pac-12 selection, Onumonu made an immediate impact at Cal earning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors in 2012. Over her five-year career she played in 82 matches and scored 33 goals, which ranks fifth in program history. Her 83 career points rank fourth and her 17 assists rank fifth.

Onumonu was chosen eighth overall in the 2017 NWSL Draft by the Boston Breakers, which is tied for the highest pick in Cal history. She has played for five clubs including NJ/NY Gotham FC, which she helped lead to a 2023 NWSL Championship. In 2021, Onomonu was named to the NWSL Best XI Second Team.
