Utah Women’s Soccer Announces Two New Additions

SALT LAKE CITY – With the start of the 2024 season fast approaching, the University of Utah women’s soccer team announced two more additions to their roster for the upcoming campaign, signing former Morehead State goalkeeper Erin Gibbs and forward Landen Matthews, formerly of TCU.

“We are excited to announce the additions of Erin Gibbs and Landen Matthews,” said coach Hideki Nakada. “Erin comes with great experience, having started for two years and earned all-conference honors. She also helped her team win their conference and reach the NCAA tournament. It’s going to be a great battle for playing time between the three quality goalkeepers we have and they will push each other to make each other better.

“Landen is someone who I got to know during the initial recruiting process and I am happy for her to join us and make our attacking group better. She is a true two-footed player and her ability to take players on in the final third will give us another dimension and depth.”

Gibbs began her collegiate career by spending two seasons in net for the Eagles, playing in 30 total matches and starting 29 times. In her freshman year, the Mesa, Arizona native set a single-season program record by crafting a goals against average of 0.75, a mark that included four shutouts. In recognition of her efforts, Gibbs was named to the Ohio Valley Conference’s All-Newcomer Team.

As a sophomore, Gibbs finished with a clean sheet eight times and contributed to one combined shutout. She also recorded the program’s fifth-best single-season goals against average. In the postseason, she held both Southeast Missouri and Tennessee Tech goalless as Morehead State won the OVC Tournament and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Those two shutouts earned Gibbs an all-tournament team spot.

Matthews did not play as a freshman in Fort Worth, but spent the previous four years putting together an impressive list of accomplishments at St. Francis High School in California. She helped her squad capture its first-ever Northern California Division I State Championship and also competed on the club circuit with California Thorn DA, the No. 2 ranked program in the nation. Her time at California Thorn DA saw her finish as one of the top 20 goal scorers in the country.
