Borussia Dortmund confirm departure of manager Edin Terzic

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the departure of Edin Terzic after the manager asked to be released from his contract.

Terzic, 41, has been with Dortmund in various roles since 2018, having also spent three years working in the youth setup before stints as an assistant to Slaven Bilic at both Besiktas and West Ham United between 2013 and 2017.

Most recently, he helped the club reach the Champions League final, where they fell short to Real Madrid, but Terzic has now confirmed his journey with Dortmund will go no further.

“Dear Borussia fans, even though it is really hurting me right now, I would like to tell you that I will be leaving BVB today,” Terzic said in a statement. “It was a huge honour to be able to lead this great club to a DFB Cup victory and most recently to a Champions League final.

“I asked those responsible for a meeting after our final at Wembley because after ten years at BVB, including five years on the coaching team and two and a half years as head coach, I feel that the upcoming new start should be accompanied by a new man on the sidelines.

“Everyone who knows me knows that during this decision-making process of the past few weeks, two hearts have been beating in my chest. But even after intensive discussions, my basic feeling has not changed. I always wish Borussia Dortmund only the very best and don’t say goodbye, but see you again.”

Dortmund’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke added: “Edin Terzic has done outstanding work during his time at BVB. We all owe him a huge debt of gratitude. Edin and I will always remain friends.”

Terzic ends his two-year spell as manager with a record of 55 wins from 96 games, having helped the team lift the 2020/21 DFB Cup as well.

Importantly, reports suggest Terzic’s departure could have a huge impact on the future of centre-back Mats Hummels. The 35-year-old is out of contract this summer and, according to Sky Sports Germany, was only prepared to consider an extension if Terzic left the club.

Hummels, who publicly questioned Terzic’s tactics in the past, now has to decide what the future holds before his contract expires later this month.
