Tottenham’s £65million club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele has left the club by mutual consent having played only 91 times since joining the club five years ago.

The Frenchman joined on a six-year deal from Lyon as part of a summer spending spree under former boss Mauricio Pochettino but last played for the Premier League side in 2022.

Ndombele, 27, has spent the last three seasons out on loan: first back with Lyon, then in Italy with Napoli where he helped the club to their first league title for 33 years and most recently with Turkish giants Galatasaray.

A permanent deal was not forthcoming after any of those temporary switches, leading Ndombele and Tottenham to agree to a termination of his deal which had further a year left to run.

It signals a sorry end to a disappointing career in English football for the midfielder, who started life in a Tottenham shirt brightly by netting on his debut against Aston Villa.

Ndombele soon fell out of favour – due to poor form and fitness problems – under Mauricio Pochettino and his successor, Jose Mourinho, before enjoying a revival of sorts in the 2020-21 season where he recorded 10 goal involvements in 46 appearances.

But opportunities were few and far between following Mourinho’s departure and time-keeping issues during pre-season saw Ange Postecoglou sanction his loan to Turkey last season.

The 27-year-old was booed off on his final appearance for Tottenham back in January 2022.

Ndombele had slowly walked off the pitch as Antonio Conte’s side trailed Morecambe 1-0 in the FA Cup, before recovering to win.
