Major League Soccer expansion team San Diego FC held a conversation with Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne’s representatives to discuss the player’s future according to a report from The Athletic’s Tom Bogert.

According to Bogert, the conversation revolved solely around De Bruyne being open to playing in southern California. Though, that was the extent of the conversation and no move is to be considered imminent.

De Bruyne just won his fourth Premier League title in a row with Manchester City providing six goals and 18 assists this season. The California-based MLS sides are traditionally linked to high-profile signings for older European players, but San Diego FC will add a new variable to the equation when it debuts in MLS next season as an expansion team.

Any interest or potential in an MLS move for De Bruyne centers around his Manchester City contract which expires next summer. De Bruyne could retire at the end of his contract with an impressive trophy haul. If the midfielder wants to continue playing, expect MLS teams and potentially Saudi Arabian clubs to try and lure De Bruyne.

Of course, there’s the added caveat that New York City FC is part of City Football Group and could be a possible destination for the Belgian midfielder. One of, if not the greatest midfielder of his generation would be a marquee signing for MLS if it ever came to fruition.

San Diego FC had advanced talks with Hirving Lozano and Sergio Ramos ahead of its debut. Borussia Dortmund legend Marco Reus has also had conversations with Charlotte FC. The German midfielder will leave Dortmund after the Champions League final.
