Angel City Football Club Hires Melissa Phillips of the London City Lionesses as First Assistant Coach

Tomorrow, May 12, at 4:30 p.m., Angel City is at home against the Houston Dash. The game, which will be the club’s AANHPI Heritage Night presented by Cedars Sinai, will be broadcast in Southern California on Bally Sports SoCal and will stream live on NWSL+, with an English-language radio broadcast on iHeart and a Spanish broadcast on 1330 AM Tu Liga Radio.


Matchup

Last week, Angel City won 2-1 on the road against the Utah Royals FC, making it their third victory in the last four matches with goals from Sydney Leroux and Claire Emslie. The first came from forward Leroux after forward Alyssa Thompson made the perfect cross in the 29th minute. Claire Emslie followed that up in the 38th minute with a penalty kick.Royals midfielder Dana Foederer cut the lead in the 56th minute with the Royals’ only goal.

Houston’s last game was a 0-1 loss at home against NJ/NY Gotham FC,their first loss in the past three matches, with the lone goal coming from Gotham’s star forward Lynn Williams in the eighth minute of the match.

Houston are currently in 13th place in the standings with a 1-4-3 (W-L-D) record. Angel City are currently in ninth with a 3-3-1 record.

Against Houston, Angel City are 1-0-3 all-time, having earned a 0-0 draw at home in their last meeting with the team.

Scouting Report

After a disappointing 10th-place finish in 2023, Houston brought in a new coach this past offseason, former Celtic Women manager Fran Alonso. Much of the team’s core from last season, including goalkeeper Jane Campbell, forward Diana Ordoñez, and midfielder Sophie Schmidt, remains intact, but Alonso has also made a handful of big-name signings.

Ordoñez currently leads the Dash in scoring with three goals on eight shots on target.

From within the NWSL, the Spaniard brought in veteran midfielder Yuki Nagasato from Chicago. Internationally, Swiss forward Ramona Bachmann, who has not played in the US since the WPS era, made the move from Paris Saint-Germain. Sunday will also mark the return of defender Paige Nielsen to BMO Stadium, who was traded by ACFC to Houston on April 20.

Making History

ACFC forwards have been setting the bar high in recent matches for the club. Thompson became the youngest player in NWSL history and first player in ACFC club history to record an assist in three consecutive matches for the club.
