Kansas City Current News Release

KANSAS CITY – The Kansas City Current are off to the best start in club history, with five wins and a draw in March and April. Recognized for their performance, three players were honored today by the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). Forward Bia Zaneratto was named the NWSL’s Player of the Month, presented by EA Sports and to the NWSL’s Best XI of the Month, presented by Amazon Prime. Joining her on the Best XI is forward Temwa Chawinga and midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo.

Bia made her Kansas City debut in the historic home opener at CPKC Stadium March 16, scoring the third goal of the first half following a run that turned her defender inside out and left her one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Her first assist came in the second match at CPKC Stadium. As a pass came into the middle, Bia stepped in front of the defender and spun around to find a streaking Chawinga on the left side.

Altogether, Bia had four goals and three assists, which jump started her quest for the 2024 NWSL Golden Boot. Her presence in the middle of the field and seven goal contributions were vital to the Current’s early season success.

Chawinga joins Bia on the NWSL Best XI of the Month, after re-joining her as a teammate with the Current this season. The two forwards once played together in China and their chemistry together was immediately apparent. Chawinga also had four goals in the season’s opening two months with an additional three assists. She is the first player from Malawi to score a goal in the NWSL.

Vanessa DiBernardo led the league with four assists throughout March and April. The Illinois native added three goals to her four assists and played 411 minutes. She has seven goal contributions this season through the first six games.

The Current are in the Pacific Northwest today preparing for a midweek match against the Seattle Reign Wednesday, May 8 at 9 p.m. CT. The team will then head home to Kansas City to host the North Carolina Courage Sunday, May 12 at 5 p.m. CT.
