Newcastle vs Tottenham: Preview, predictions and lineups

Eddie Howe

Tottenham Hotspur’s charge for the top four faces another significant test this Saturday as they travel to Newcastle United in the Premier League.

The Lilywhites took advantage of dropped points from Aston Villa last weekend with a 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest that saw them sneak into fourth on goal difference. With Unai Emery’s side travelling to Arsenal this weekend, Spurs have a real chance to cement their spot in the Champions League qualification spots.

Newcastle were also victorious last weekend after a 1-0 win away at Fulham, only their fourth triumph on the road this season. Eddie Howe’s injury-hit side have been much more efficient at St James’ Park and they know they can finish the weekend sixth should they beat Tottenham on Tyneside and other results go in their favour.

The reverse fixture was about as one-sided as Premier League games come, with Spurs running out comfortable 4-1 winners in north London. However, Tottenham’s last trip to St James’ Park saw them lose 6-1 – a game in which they were five goals down after just 21 minutes.

Here is 90min’s preview of the game.

Where do you even start with Newcastle’s current injury list?

The Magpies could be without 12 players for the visit of Spurs, with the likes of Callum Wilson, Nick Pope, Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles and Joelinton long-term absentees. Young Lewis Miley is also sidelined until May, while Sandro Tonali is still suspended.

Kieran Trippier will be another big miss against his former employers, with Tino Livramento also potentially missing Saturday’s clash with an ankle injury. Miguel Almiron is out too, with Joe Willock and Matt Targett also likely unavailable.
