Gary O’Neil reveals ‘truth’ behind Man Utd rumours

Gary O'Neil

Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O’Neil has denied rumours linking him to a coaching role at Manchester United, saying there is ‘no truth’ in the reported interest.

Reports earlier in the week revealed that United were initiating talks over a coaching role for the former Bournemouth boss. O’Neil has since denied this, but believes it is an honour to be linked with the club.

Addressing the media before Wolves travel to Aston Villa on Saturday, O’Neil said: “I don’t know where it came from. Growing up, Liverpool and Manchester United always felt special. It’s an honour to be linked even if there’s no truth in it.

“But all of my focus is on a three-game Premier League week and how we can help the group. I’m a head coach and I’m always going to be a head coach.

“I’m really enjoying my time at Wolves. I was only made aware of [the links] by the media team to prepare for your questions.”

O’Neil, who landed his first managerial role at Bournemouth in 2022, joined Wolves in August and has quickly become a vital figure at the club. He’s led them to suprising success, taking the once relegation-bound side into European contention.

It’s even more impressive for O’Neil, who took over less than a week before their first fixture of the 2023/24 campaign after a shocking sacking from his former club.

It seems the 40-year-old is happy to remain at Wolves, where he is highly regarded by both fans and players alike.

Meanwhile, the pressure is piling on Erik ten Hag, who may be forced to fight for his position to remain at United. His future is still undecided, but reports show that Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, Brentford’s Thomas Frank, and England boss Gareth Southgate have been considered as potential successors to the Dutchman.
