'He's Not Dumb' - Klopp Refutes Reports Edwards Tried to Convince Him to Stay

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has denied claims that club chief Michael Edwards asked him to remain as boss following his announcement he would step down at the end of this season.

Edwards returned as Liverpool’s chief executive of football recently as per Fenway Sports Group, having previously worked successfully at the club.

Edwards and Klopp enjoyed a successful period together and have a strong relationship, with reports emerging the former asked to German to stay on beyond this season.

“No, because he’s not dumb,” Klopp told reporters, when asked if the reports were true.

“It was not a subject to talk about. Can you imagine if I changed my mind now? I don’t say these things without thinking.

“We always had a really good relationship, it was very good on professional basis anyway.

“Lots of good things happened when we were together and then he decided to do something else.

“Now he’s back, I’m really happy. I want to see the club in the best possible place after I leave. It’s a top solution.”

Klopp, 56, announced in late January that he would exiting Liverpool at the conclusion of the 2023-24 campaign.

The German has spent nine years with the Reds, winning one Premier League title in 2019-20 and an FA Cup in 2022, plus two EFL Cups and two UEFA Champions League crowns.

Klopp’s Liverpool are currently firmly in the title race, sitting second on 64 points from 28 games, one point behind leaders Arsenal with champions Manchester City third on 63 points.
