Langley, BC – Vancouver FC will kick off their 2024 TELUS Canadian Championship journey on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET against the reigning Canadian Premier League (CPL) regular season champions Cavalry FC, the club announced on Monday. The Preliminary Round match will be hosted at ATCO Field in Calgary, Atla., for Vancouver’s second-ever appearance in the tournament.

“We are very excited to be competing in our second Canadian Championship,” said Afshin Ghotbi, Head Coach, Vancouver FC. “We have worked very hard in the off-season to build a competitive squad who can challenge reigning champions and we look forward to battling for the Voyageurs Cup starting in April.”

Last month, Vancouver announced it would face Cavalry as their first-round opponent after Canada Soccer unveiled the matchups for the six Preliminary Round games. The announcement also revealed the placement of the two first-round byes granted to 2023 Voyageurs Cup champions, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and runners-up, CF Montréal.

Vancouver’s opening stage Preliminary Round against Cavalry will be played in a single-match knockout format with the victor advancing to compete against Whitecaps FC in the Quarter-Final stage. The two-match home and away series will be scheduled throughout the month of May before a secondary draw will be completed to determine the matchups for the Semi-Final Rounds and Host Club for the Final Match.

The 2024 TELUS Canadian Championship will be Vancouver’s second appearance in the tournament after making its debut in April 2023 against York United FC as the club’s second-ever match in its inaugural season. This year, VFC will have two home matches under their belt before travelling on the first road-trip of the 2024 CPL season which will start and end at ATCO Field with a stop in York to break up the trip.

Vancouver kicks off their second CPL season at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET on Sunday, Apr. 14 by hosting Valour FC at Willoughby Park. Tickets to Vancouver’s season opener and all other home matches can be purchased online.
