HARRISON, N.J. – New York Red Bulls midfielder Emil Forsberg has been named captain ahead of the 2024 MLS season, the club announced today. Defender Sean Nealis and goalkeeper Carlos Coronel will serve as vice-captains.
Forsberg, 32, joined New York in December from RB Leipzig, where he made 325 appearances across all competitions. He recorded 71 goals and 68 assists for Leipzig and won two DFB Pokals with the club. The midfielder helped RB Leipzig earn promotion to the Bundesliga in 2016. Forsberg has made 86 international caps for Sweden, where he has scored 21 goals. He has been named Swedish Midfielder of the Year four times in 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2021.
The team will select a Leadership Council in the coming days.
New York opens up their 2024 season on Sunday, February 25 against Nashville SC at GEODIS Park. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. ET with coverage on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV and Red Bulls Radio in English via TuneIn, NewYorkRedBulls.com, and New York Red Bulls app.
