Liverpool to recall Fabio Carvalho from RB Leipzig loan

Fabio Carvalho

Liverpool youngster Fabio Carvalho has informed his parent club that he wants to cut short his season-long loan to RB Leipzig, 90min understands.

Carvalho initially joined Liverpool while still a teenager in 2022 after a breakthrough season during Fulham’s Championship promotion campaign. He made 21 appearances for the Reds in all competitions but moved to Germany this season in pursuit of more regular playing time.

However, the 21-year-old attacker hasn’t had the opportunities with Leipzig he would have hoped for. As the Bundesliga’s winter break nears, Carvalho has only started once in the league and not at all in the Champions League. He has totalled just 39 Bundesliga minutes since the start of October.

90min understands Liverpool fully intend on having Carvalho return to Anfield next month rather than see him continue in a fringe role with Leipzig.

It is likely that Carvalho will initially train with Liverpool for a few weeks upon returning from Germany. At that point, and with the January transfer window still open, the club will assess whether it will be best to keep him with them for the rest of the season or find a new loan until summer.

It was Carvalho’s personal desire, rather than Liverpool’s, for him to go out on loan back in August. The club preferred for him to stay this season, but the Portugal Under-21 international pushed for the chance and was ultimately granted his wish. Now that it has proven unsuccessful and will be cut short, Liverpool staff are not particularly happy with regard to the situation.

Carvalho was born in Portugal and spent the early years of his childhood in and around Lisbon. He had been in the youth ranks of Benfica, but his family relocated to London when the youngster was 11 and he spent a couple of years at a local junior club before being spotted by Fulham.

Growing up in England from an early age has made Carvalho eligible to represent the country at international level. He has previously played for England at various age groups, but joined Portugal’s U21 side in 2022. Carvalho remains uncapped at senior level and is still eligible for both countries, although he was named in Portugal’s preliminary World Cup squad last year.
