Women’s Soccer Finishes Season in Highest United Soccer Coaches Ranking at No. 6


PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women’s soccer team (17-6-1, 6-2-1 ACC) secured their highest ranking in program history – coming in at No. 6 spot in the final United Soccer Coaches rankings of the season. 

The Panthers started the season at No. 14 in the preseason poll – their highest preseason placement in program history. Pitt earned a top-25 ranking in eight of the 11 weeks of the organization’s top-25 poll. The Panthers also received votes for three out of those 11 weeks of rankings. Pitt earned as high as No. 12 in the last season, No. 19 in 2021 and No. 12 in 2020.

Pitt set program records for most wins overall (17), ACC wins (6), home wins (9), points (194), goals (64) and assists (66). The Panthers posted victories over Duke and North Carolina in the regular season, beating both for the first time in program history. The coaching staff who received the NCAA Atlantic Region Staff of the Year award helped the team propel past five top 25 teams including three in the top ten. Pitt also advanced to the ACC Championship semifinals after defeating North Carolina in the quarterfinals. The Panthers secured a spot in the NCAA Championship Elite Eight for the first time after knocking off Memphis in the Third Round, 3-0, Arkansas in the Second Round, 4-3, and Ohio State in the First Round, 6-0. Pitt set a record for most athletes named to All-ACC teams in program history. Sarah Schupansky became the first Panther to secure a spot on the All-ACC First Team. Amanda West earned All-ACC Second Team honors with Deborah Abiodun, Landy Mertz and Samiah Phiri on the All-ACC Third Team. Abiodun also earned a spot on the All-ACC Freshman Team. Abiodun, Schupansky, West and Mertz represented Pitt on the 2023 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Women’s All-Atlantic Region Teams with Abiodun, Schupansky and West on the Second Team and Mertz on the Third Team.
