Team captain Wyatt Meyer has started in 49 of 58 games played at Cal.

California men’s soccer star Wyatt Meyer was one of 44 college players chosen to participate in the fourth annual MLS College Showcase slated to run Wednesday through Saturday in Phoenix, Major League Soccer announced Tuesday. The scouting event takes place ahead of the Dec. 19 MLS SuperDraft.

The Arizona combine will include training sessions, testing, interviews and match play.

Meyer, a second-semester junior who excels as a central defender and a central defensive midfielder for the Golden Bears, has collected his share of accolades this fall, including, as announced Monday, a berth on the United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region Second Team. Also the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and member of the All-Pac-12 First Team in 2023, Meyer – who has played four seasons at Cal – helped the Bears (1.06 goals-against average) achieve the team’s best defensive performance since 2013 (0.97 GAA).

A contributor to the attack as well, the Berkeley native scored his first goal since 2021 in the season finale at then-No. 22 Stanford on Nov. 11 and posted two assists in his fourth season. One of his assists came in a 2-2 tie with College Cup semifinalist Oregon State on Sept. 14 in Berkeley. Equally adept in the classroom, Meyer – an English major who’s also pursuing a minor in history – was chosen for the 2023 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team. He also writes the Wyatt’s Water Break blog on CalBears.com.

The son of former Cal women’s soccer assistant coach and player Jennifer “J.T.” Thomas, Meyer has had a long association with both Cal soccer programs, as detailed in the Cal Sports Quarterly feature “Born to be a Bear.”
