Mangione, Awodesu Invited to 2023 adidas MLS College Showcase


NEW YORK – Penn State men’s soccer student-athletes Peter Mangione and Femi Awodesu have been invited to the 2023 adidas Major League Soccer (MLS) College Showcase, the league announced Tuesday. The duo are two of 44 college players invited to participate in the showcase, which takes places December 6-9 in Phoenix, Arizona. 
 
The four-day event will give technical staffs from every MLS club an opportunity to scout top collegiate prospects in the nation ahead of the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, which will take place Dec. 19 and feature an expanded eligible player pool. 
 
The event features players ranging from freshman to graduate students, participating in training sessions, testing, interviews and match play. The College Showcase is a closed-door scouting event officially sanctioned by the NCAA.
 
Mangione, a native of Maryland, played in 67 career games for the Nittany Lions, collecting 31 goals which ranks 13th in program history. He also ranks 14th all-time for his 78 career points. The senior forward netted 10 goals and registered four assists for 24 points this season. 
 
The three-time team captain was most recently named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year for the second time in his career and earned a spot on first team All-Big Ten. 
 
Awodesu, a Pennsylvania native, appeared in 65 games in his career. The senior defender has contributed to 21 shutouts with the Nittany Lions. Offensively, Awodesu scored on three occasions this season. 
 
The team captain was named the 2023 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on first team All-Big Ten. 
 
The pair are just the second and third Penn State men’s soccer student-athletes to be invited to the event. In 2019, Aaron Molloy was invited to the showcase. Molloy was drafted by the Portland Timbers with the 16th pick in the 2020 SuperDraft.
 
The eligible player list for the 2024 MLS SuperDraft will be announced at a later date following the 2024 MLS College Showcase.
