FAYETTEVILLE, AR – The University of Pittsburgh defeats the Arkansas Razorbacks in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, Friday night, 4-3. With this win, the Panthers advance to the Sweet Sixteen for the second time in program history.
The Panthers were ready for it all going into the first half. Pitt was able to put their name on the board first in the 17th minute. The all-time leading scorer, Amanda West, secured her 50th career goal tonight after Landy Mertz fed her a beautiful cross.
Arkansas equalized the ball two minutes later. Pitt continued to create scoring opportunities but couldn’t find their right moment just yet. The Razorbacks managed to take the 2-1 lead at the 32nd minute.
At the 42nd minute, Keera Melenhorst tied the score after a double assist from Mertz and West.
Pitt headed into the locker room with the board all tied up. In the first 45 minutes, the Panthers posted 11 shots to the Razorbacks’ eight with six on target.
Coming back for the second half – Pitt was ready to play their game.
Arkansas was able to take the early lead out of the locker room – making the score 3-2, but Pitt wasn’t done yet.
At the 76th minute, Ellie Coffield capitalized off of an indirect penalty just outside the box – sinking the ball into the top corner of the net, but she wasn’t done collecting points yet.
Leaving just under 90 seconds left on the board, Coffield posted the game winning goal after heading in the ball from Sarah Schupanksy’s corner kick. With this assist, Schupansky secured the program record for overall career points.
