Men’s Soccer Concludes Regular Season at Wisconsin


MADISON, Wis.- Penn State men’s soccer faces Wisconsin in final regular season game of the 2023 campaign. The Nittany Lions (9-3-3, 4-2-1 Big Ten) are in search of their third consecutive win with the Big Ten Regular Season Championship on the line. This will be the second time in just three years Penn State is in contention for the title in head coach Jeff Cook‘s sixth season in Happy Valley. 
 
Peter Mangione was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season as announced by the conference on Tuesday. Mangione along with senior teammate Femi Awodesu are on scoring streaks, notching goals in each game this week.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Mangione scored his ninth goal of the season off a penalty kick. 
  • Awodesu scored his second goal of the year, marking the first time in his career he has scored a goal in back-to-back games. A bang-bang series of passes from Mangione to Liscum to Awodesu set the senior defender up.
  • Sophomore defender Matthew Henderson found his first collegiate goal off a corner kick.
  • Kris Shakes earned his eighth clean sheet of the season as the Nittany Lions’ keeper. 

NITTANY LIONS IN THE RANKS

  • Penn State is tied for first in the conference standings with Michigan State and Northwestern, both teams sitting at 13 points in the standings. It ranks first in goals scored with 28 and second in points with 76.
  • Peter Mangione’s nine goals is the most scored in the conference and fifth highest scored nationally.
  • Kris Shakes ranks 13th in the nation in save percentage (.814) and first in the conference. Shakes’ seven shutouts are good for second in the conference 5th in the nation first in the Big Ten.
