No. 18 Soccer Begins Season's Final Push in the Mountains

TEMPE – Sun Devil Soccer (10-3-4) will head on the road this week for a pair of matches in the mountains, playing Utah (5-6-6) on Thursday at 5 p.m. MST and Colorado (10-4-3) on Sunday at 11 a.m. MST. Thursday’s match will be broadcast on Pac-12 Arizona, and Sunday’s can be streamed on Colorado’s Live Stream Network.

Arizona State is coming off an impressive 1-0 win over USC to give the No.11 ranked team its first conference loss. Midfielder Hannah Lapeire scored the Sun Devil’s game-winner in the 72nd minute by finishing a cross that Keri Matthews sent into the box, making this Lapeier’s second goal and Matthews’s sixth assist. In the Maroon and Gold’s following match on Sunday, the Sun Devils held up a team defensive effort and was less than two minutes from a scoreless draw against the No. 2 Bruins before an 89th-minute goal by UCLA ended the team’s five-game win streak.

Goalkeeper Pauline Nelles had an exceptional weekend against the California teams and was named the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week. Along with the award, Nelles broke the single-season school record for shutouts with her ninth of the season in the 1-0 defeat of USC. Nelles’ standout match against the Bruins and their collective 23 shots also tied her career-high of nine saves.

The Utah Utes are coming off a 3-1 loss to Washington and a 1-1 draw against Washington State. In Thursday’s match against the Huskies, Washington dominated the scoring by recording the first three goals, but Utah’s Kelly Bullock scored for the Utes in the 79th minute to deny Washington the shutout. In Sunday’s match versus the Beavers, Katie O’Kane scored the opening goal in the 53rd minute – her team-leading eighth of the season. The Utes, however, could not preserve the lead, and Washington State scored in the 83rd minute to split the points.

Colorado, similarly to Utah, is coming off a loss and a draw over the weekend. Thursday’s match saw a 1-0 loss to Washington State, who scored the lone goal in the 23rd minute. The Buffaloes then faced Washington on Sunday, where Colorado freshman Ava Priest put one in the back of the net in the 60th minute for her first collegiate goal, but just three minutes later, the Huskies equalized.

The series between the Sun Devils and the Utes is split even at 6-6-4 in its history, and the most recent match ended in a scoreless draw last…
