Hokies drop 1-0 decision at No. 2 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team fell to No. 2 North Carolina 1-0 on Friday night in Chapel Hill. 

The Hokies’ stand at 3-3-3, while the Tar Heels remain unbeaten at 6-0-3.

“I am pleased with the effort and work that the ladies put in tonight,” said head coach Chugger Adair. “The team followed the game plan in the first half and we were solid. We created three or four quality chances and were really tight defensively in the first half, but were wore down in the second. The Tar Heels increased their level of intensity and we didn’t rise to the occasion in the second half.

“The women kept us in the mix with a very good North Carolina team.” 

How it Happened
Virginia Tech outshot the Tar Heels 8-4 in the first half with Victoria Haugen taking the first shot of the day in the fifth minute of the match. 

Goalkeeper Alia Skinner headed into the locker even with North Carolina’s goalkeeper Emmie Allen with two saves in the first 45 minutes of play. 

The match advantage changed in favor of North Carolina in the second, taking four shots in the first 15 minutes. Freshman Evelyn Shores scored the lone goal of the match in the 67th minute leading to a UNC 1-0 victory. 

Game Notes

  • Goalkeeper Alia Skinner tallied six saves. 
  • Natalie Mitchell and Aino Vourinen logged two shots each in the first half. 
  • The Hokies were challenged by a 13-0 shot deficit in the second. 
  • Carolina’s Evelyn Shores scored the lone goal of the match.

The Hokies will travel to Newton, Mass. to play Boston College on Sept. 21 at the Newton Campus Lacrosse & Soccer Field.
