Todd Boehly looks set to stand by Frank Lampard for the rest of the season despite ‘some at Stamford Bridge’ wanting Mauricio Pochettino to take the helm now.
Lampard has overseen six defeats from six games in interim charge of the Blues, after he rode in on his white horse following the sacking of Graham Potter.
Chelsea’s form has dropped considerably despite an already very low bar under Lampard’s stewardship, with the Blues players now not only not scoring, but also not creating chances.
Reports suggest Lampard will stay in the hotseat for the rest of the campaign regardless of the results, with Pochettino wise to stay away for now as the former Spurs boss on a hiding to nothing taking over a bloated squad with no motivation.
And Boehly has already agreed that Pochettino – who has not yet been confirmed as the new permanent boss at Stamford Bridge, with the finer details of his contract still being ironed out – won’t take charge until the summer.
But that’s not gone down well with ‘some at Stamford Bridge’ who ‘believe the team would benefit from Pochettino taking over before the season ends’, according to The Daily Mail.
It makes little sense for Pochettino to take over now, but with each loss the motivational mountain he will have to drag the players up next season gets higher.
After the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal, Lampard claimed his players were “too nice”.
“We weren’t good enough, we were too nice to play against, too passive,” Lampard told Sky Sports. “In possession we weren’t playing balls over their press, or winning second balls.
“Chelsea have been a big success for 20 years domestically and in the Champions League, at the moment we’re not in that position. But from the moment I’ve been here it’s been evident we’re too nice as a team.
“We can’t change things overnight but we better get their quickly because we have another game at the weekend and games to come.
“The passive nature of our game you can attribute it to many things. There’s the easy go-to that the players don’t care enough, but they do care.
“You can be low on confidence but still show a dynamic side to your games. All the things we spoke about before the game we didn’t do.
“We’re a little bit conditioned at the moment which makes us too nice to play against. Maybe it was a different gap years ago but that’s football.
