Former Chelsea star explains ‘problem’ this season and offers Pochettino verdict

The 2022-23 season has been nothing short of a disaster for Chelsea and Nemanja Matic has explained where he thinks things have gone wrong this season.

Chelsea currently find themselves 12th in the table and just nine points above the relegation zone.

Frank Lampard has struggled to uplift the spirits at the club and they are now winless in their last six league matches.

Matic played over 150 games for Chelsea and he thinks that their unbalanced squad has caused issues this season.

“I have to say Chelsea did a great job signing so many talented players, but in the future, next season, they’ll need to make some balance between experience and young players,” Matic told Sky Sports.

When you sign six, seven or eight young top talented players they all expect to play and that is a problem.

“Some will need time to adapt to the Premier League. They will need six more months or one season to adapt, but during that transition the experienced players can help them.

“I think at the end of the season they’ll understand what the problem was and they will try to change. Next season I expect Chelsea to be much better, but it is going to be very difficult.”

Chelsea have used 32 players in the league this season, which for context is 10 more than Manchester City have used.

Mauricio Pochettino is the favourite to take the job next season and Matic has given his verdict on the Argentine manager.

“He’s a great manager. He showed at Spurs and PSG that he can play some great football. He has experience and I know he’s very professional and a very honest person, so why not?”

The former Tottenham boss has been out of work since the summer of 2022 when he was let go by PSG.

Pochettino did win the Ligue 1 title during his final season, but things began to unravel for him in France after PSG’s Champions League exit.

Chelsea have plenty of problems to fix right now and he would have his work cut out for him next season.

The financial backing he would receive will be a huge incentive to take the job, but as this season has shown, money can’t solve all of Chelsea’s problems.

Given their season is all but over right now, the club will already be planning their steps for next season.
