Udinese sign FC Cincinnati forward Brenner in record-breaking deal

FC Cincinnati forward Brenner is headed to Serie A side Udinese.

The Italian team reportedly paid a $10m fee plus add-ons and a sell-on percentage for the player, meaning a record-breaking transfer for Cincinnati. The deal also lands within the top 10 most expensive outbound moves in MLS history.

“We’re extremely happy for Brenner that he’s able to make this move and play in one of the biggest leagues in Europe,” FC Cincinnati general manager Chris Albright said in a release.

“Our ultimate goal at FC Cincinnati is to win games for our incredible fans, and we understand that developing players is central to attracting the best talent.

Brenner will remain with Cincinnati through the beginning of July, joining Udinese when the European transfer window officially opens. His last Major League Soccer match will likely be on July 1, as the Eastern Conference team hosts the New England Revolution at TQL Stadium.

He departs after three seasons with the Ohio club, managing 27 goals and eight assists in 72 appearances across all competitions.

“This is a significant transfer for our club and is a testament to everything our staff has done in the past year and a half. Our ownership will continue to give us the resources to compete and this transfer only adds to that commitment,” added Albright.

Cincinnati have seen a lot of action lately, as several European teams look to their offensive players as potential transfers. Clubs remain particularly interested in star forward Brandon Vazquez, but Brenner’s departure might complicate a move now for the USMNT figure.

Without Brenner, the team must rely solely on Vazquez and Lucho Acosta, with little depth otherwise. Should Vazquez make his exit this summer, head coach Pat Noonan would have to make emergency signings to keep the team afloat for the season half of the 2023 campaign and leagues cup.
