Steven Gerrard linked with shock management return in Greece

Steven Gerrard has been linked with a sensational return to management at Greek giants Olympiacos.

The former Rangers boss has been out of work since being sacked by Aston Villa in October last year, with the club hovering just above the relegation zone after a dismal run of results.

The Villans have turned their fortunes around under Gerrard’s replacement Unai Emery, and have forced their way into the Premier League’s top six after stringing together a number of wins thanks to Ollie Watkins’ continued goalscoring.

As for Gerrard, he’s been seen clutching a microphone on the sidelines, providing punditry at times for BT Sport’s coverage of Premier League and Champions League games.

Gerrard was recently tipped to be in the running for the Poland national team job – former Portugal boss Fernando Santos was eventually appointed – and another shock link has now emerged linking him to the vacant Olympiacos job.

Greek publication sport-fm report that the 42-year-old is viewed as an alternative to Gennaro Gattuso, who most recently left Valencia just seven months into a two-year contract. The Italian is thought to be Olympiacos’ preferred candidate but is unwilling to rush into a decision over his future – potentially opening the door for Gerrard to muscle in and get back into management.

Gerrard’s first management role was with Rangers, whom he guided to the Scottish Premiership title for the first time in a decade, before he left the club to take charge of Villa in 2021.

His spell in the West Midlands lasted just 11 months though, with Gerrard’s 40 games in charge yielding just 13 wins at a win percentage of 32.5%.
