Carragher performs U-turn over Arsenal star as he admits he’s ‘never been more wrong’

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale makes a save

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher says he doesn’t think he’s “ever been more wrong” about a signing than Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The Gunners secured a crucial point in the race for the title at Anfield on Sunday with Mikel Arteta’s men still seven points ahead of second-placed Manchester City.

Arsenal went into a comfy 2-0 lead within half an hour at Anfield before Mo Salah got one back for Liverpool just before the interval.

That gave the Reds the momentum going into the second half and their pressure eventually paid off in the 87th minute when Roberto Firmino headed in an equaliser.

Arsenal had Ramsdale to thank for not throwing away all three points as he produced brilliant saves from Darwin Nunez, Mo Salah and Ibrahima Konate.

The Gunners were criticised for spending around £24m on Ramsdale in the summer of 2021 after suffering back-to-back relegations with Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

Carragher was one of those negative voices initially but the Liverpool legend admits that Ramsdale has proved him wrong with the former Blades goalkeeper a key reason Arsenal are leading the Premier League.

“Listen, we all say different things at different times and you’re proven wrong about managers, players, certain teams,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been more wrong – or certainly this season proven wrong – [than] by Aaron Ramsdale.

“I watched him at times obviously with different teams where he goes down, you see lots of goals go in, you think, “Can the keeper do better there?”

“And then when Arsenal bought him I was scratching my head. I’ll be honest, I could not believe it when they bought him.

“But how he’s overtaken [Bernd] Leno – he’s had to move on – and his position in the England squad now as well.

“But the role he has, not just as a goalkeeper, he’s a personality. The crowd feed off him. And at times that can maybe cross a line and he gets involved in things that maybe he shouldn’t.

“But you see his reaction when Mo Salah misses the penalty, he’s right in his face. He’s fast, he’s confident, he’s cocky.

“As I’ve said, I can’t believe what I’ve basically seen this season and the role he has played in this Arsenal title charge.”
