WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The Greenville Triumph will compete in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tonight across the country in Phoenix, Arizona. Since its inception, the club has played four matches across two editions of the tournament. Greenville earned wins in 2019 against fellow USL League One opponent, Tormenta FC and in 2022 against the Championship team, the Oakland Roots.

The club hosted Tormenta FC in the second round of 2019’s tournament, with Anderson native Cole Seiler scoring a late goal to seal a 1-0 win. GTSC welcomed the USL Championship’s Charleston Battery in the third round, leading 1-0 before allowing two late goals to the Battery in a loss. Last year, the team faced MLS side, Charlotte FC, during the third round and held them to 1-1 in regular time before conceding in overtime for a 2-1 loss. The match brought fans from around the Carolinas leading to a club attendancerecord in Triumph Stadium at Legacy Early College.

Before moving into attack, though, Greenville will have to control the midfield more effectively than it did in the 1-0 loss to Richmond two Saturdays ago.

Phoenix has just three matches under its belt, two more than Greenville. The west coast team is 0-1-2 this season, recording a draw versus Greenville’s southern state neighbor in the USL Championship, Charleston Battery, and a loss and tie from San Diego Loyal SC. Phoenix currently sits at the bottom of the table in the Western Conference at number 12 with two…
