Arsenal’s returning striker Gabriel Jesus said he was ‘a little disappointed’ to not see out Saturday’s 4-1 win over Leeds United and made it clear he thinks he’s ready to finish the game next time out.
Jesus said: “Obviously, every player wants to play the full 90 minutes.
“I think I’m ready to play more minutes. However, when the ref said to me I was going off, I was a little bit disappointed because I want to play, but of course I respect the manager and the other players as well. So, it was 60 minutes, but I enjoyed it a lot.”
The Brazilian forward scored twice as the Gunners continued the charge for the Premier League title.
The brace marked Jesus’ first goals since scoring against North London rivals Tottenham way back in October last year.
After signing from title rivals Manchester City in the summer, Jesus racked up five goals and six assists in his first 16 league games this season, before suffering a knee injury while on international duty at the World Cup.
The injury kept the striker out of action for over three months and saw him miss 12 league games for the Gunners.
Since returning to action in March, Jesus has only just managed to accumulate 90 minutes across his three matches.
But a well taken penalty and some great movement to get on the end of a Trossard cut-back against Leeds will have Arsenal fans hoping their number nine is back up to full speed heading into the final stretch of the season.
Speaking after the match, Jesus said: “It was so good playing again, starting again and feeling the atmosphere of the crowd. I want to score and I practice penalties.
“The most important thing is always the three points. It doesn’t matter how [we do it], but three points are always the most important thing.
“Obviously, I want to score, I want to help the team with the goals. I missed a big part of the season and now I just want to play and help the team.”
Saturday’s win, which also saw goals from Ben White and Granit Xhaka for Arsenal as well as a Rasmus Kristensen consolation for Leeds, moved the Gunners back to 8 points clear of City at the top of table.
Arsenal travel to Anfield on Sunday to take on Liverpool, and will need Jesus firing again if they are to continue the charge for a first Premier League title since 2004.
