March 24, 2023 – Canadian Premier League (CPL)Atletico Ottawa News Release

OTTAWA, ON – Atlético Ottawa has today announced an expansion of its relationship with Ottawa South United (OSU) under the “Powered By Atlético Ottawa” Program, in an effort to provide a new pathway to professional soccer in the capital region. Atlético Ottawa and OSU will work together on OSU’s PLSQ Program, seeking to bridge the gap that exists locally for players transitioning from the youth club system and into professional soccer.

For the 2023 season, OSU’s PLSQ Men’s First Team, Reserves & Women’s First Team will be officially named “OSU Atlético” and its teams will wear Atlético’s famous Red & White stripes. The club will help OSU identify players for the PLSQ squad, providing them with a new and different pathway toward professional soccer without having to leave the region.

“The youth clubs in the surrounding region have done a great job at providing a platform to develop players, especially OSU and the rest of the Powered by Atlético Ottawa Clubs,” said Fernando López, CEO, Atlético Ottawa. “The expansion of our ‘Powered By Program’ will allow us to keep working at the top of the pyramid and with the best talent looking to break into professional soccer in Canada and beyond. We’re thrilled to extend this relationship and offer more opportunities to Ottawa’s talented soccer players.”

On this landmark moment for the growth of the sport in the city, OSU Club President, Bill Michalopulos added: “OSU Soccer is pleased to be able to work with Atlético Ottawa & Atlético de Madrid to help bring this exciting partnership to fruition in 2023 to Ottawa’s youth players.”

Atlético Ottawa remains dedicated to its mandate to increase pathways to playing soccer in Canada. The Powered By Atlético Ottawa program, created in partnership with Atlético de Madrid and the Canadian Premier League, currently supports 11 local soccer clubs from across the Ottawa-Gatineau region: Ottawa South United, Ottawa City Soccer Club, Ottawa Gloucester Hornets, Gloucester Dragons, Russel Soccer Club, St. Anthony SC, Nepean Hotspurs Soccer Club, CS Aylmer, FC Petite Nation, Association de Soccer de Gatineau and Seaway Valley Soccer Club.
