Newcastle United are reportedly keen on signing Wolves centre-back Max Kilman, but ‘it is believed’ they’ll ‘face stiff competition following his performances this season’.
Kilman has been a consistent performer for Wolves over the past couple of seasons, other than when injured. Indeed, he made 30 Premier League starts last season as the Molineux outfit finished 10th.
This term, he’s yet to miss a game, starting in all 24 of the club’s league games. In fact, he’s not missed a single minute of league action so far.
He’s had to step up and be more of a leader since Conor Coady departed for Everton in the summer. That he’s been so crucial to his side is likely one of the reasons there is interest in him.
Indeed, Football Insider reports Newcastle are ‘plotting a summer move’ for the Englishman. However, that report suggests it’s believed they’ll face ‘stiff competition following his performances this season’.
The report does not specifically name any sides that might be interested in taking Kilman on board other than the Magpies.
However, Chelsea were linked with a move for him in 2022, after sending scouts to watch him. While nothing came of it, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the free-spending Blues had him on their list for this summer.
In any case, Kilman seems a decent addition to the Newcastle side. They’ve made a habit of signing solid Premier League performers over the past few transfer windows.
Chris Wood, Dan Burn and Nick Pope all fall into that category. Despite Sven Botman and Fabian Schar’s solid partnership at the back – the Magpies have conceded 15 league goals this season, the lowest in the league – Kilman would be another good addition.
That he’s been such a useful asset in defence at the bottom end of the table means he’d likely be even more solid towards the top. As such, he could split up that partnership, or add another quality option from the bench.
Furthermore, he’s been touted as a potential England international since 2021. Indeed, there’s clearly a quality player in there, and a move to a side who are challenging for a top-four spot could secure his place in Gareth Southgate’s plans for the future.
