Softball Takes Down Elon in Five Innings

East Tennessee State

RALEIGH – The NC State softball team (3-7) picked up a 11-3 win over in-state foe Elon (4-6) on Tuesday evening, picking up its third-straight win over the Phoenix dating back to the 2020 season.

Serving as NC State’s first midweek contest of the 2023 campaign, the Wolfpack broke the ice in the bottom of the second frame when a bases-loaded walk drawn by Rebecca Murray scored Taylor Ensley to move the Pack ahead 1-0.

The Wolfpack wasted no time building on its early lead, as ensuing batter MaKayla Marbury then fired a grand slam over the left-field fence to push the Pack’s lead to 5-0. Marbury’s home run was her second of the season, with the first coming in NC State’s Feb. 12 loss at Arizona. Her four-run shot was additionally the Wolfpack’s first grand slam of its 2023 slate.

The Pack’s trademark ‘Home Run Mindset’ reappeared in the bottom half of the third inning, with Ensley leading off the frame by sending a solo home run over the left-center wall to stretch NC State’s lead to 6-0. After Amanda Hasler doubled to right field later in the inning, Bailey Edwards entered as a pinch runner and was then moved to third base on a flyout. Edwards proceeded to score on a wild pitch, with NC State moving ahead 7-0 on the miscue from the Phoenix.

Elon picked up its first run in the top of the fourth after Payton Swart crossed home plate after Bella Devesa flied out to right field. The Phoenix then picked up their last two runs in the top of the fifth after Claudia Penny singled up the middle.
