Inzaghi Downplays Dzeko Reaction to Lukaku Substitution

Inzaghi Downplays Dzeko Reaction to Lukaku Substitution

Inter Milan head coach Simone Inzaghi downplayed the significance of Edin Dzeko’s reaction to being substituted in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over FC Porto.

Dzeko was replaced in the 58th minute for Romelu Lukaku by Inzaghi with scores locked at 0-0 at the time in their UEFA Champions League last-16 first leg.

The Bosnian reacted angrily at the decision at the time, before Lukaku went on to score an 86th-minute winner.

“I was expecting this question,” Inzaghi told reporters.

“I too got angry when I went off the pitch in these matches, but it was enough for me to see him jump up after Lukaku’s goal.

“These are things that happen on the pitch for the adrenaline of these evenings, let’s not forget that in these 18 months with Inter, Dzeko has done a lot.”

Inter gained their slender advantage after having 18-10 shots including four on target each, with the Italians having 60 per cent possession.

Inzaghi added: “We played well against a very physical side.

“There are regrets that we failed to convert some of the first half chances, while we ran some risks after the break on the counter-attack, but the substitutions helped.

“We wanted to do something more, but it was a great performance in the circumstances. We should’ve been quicker moving the ball around and building out from the back.

“It wasnt easy with Porto pressing so aggressively, but we still deserved to take the lead in the first half.”
