Potter danger ramps up as former Chelsea man details ‘unmanageable situation’ hurting boss

Graham Potter, Chelsea, February 2023

Former Chelsea man Rob Green has described the club’s situation following their heavy recruitment as “unmanageable,” as he admitted the task is now harder for boss Graham Potter.

It’s not been the best run of late for Chelsea. Since November, the Blues have won just twice in the league, against Bournemouth and Crystal Palace.

Potter’s side were also stunned by a 1-0 loss against the Premier League’s bottom side Southampton in their last game. They’re way under expectations, even compared to the start they had under the manager.

Indeed, Potter’s first loss in any competition for the Stamford Bridge outfit came almost a month and a half into his tenure. And after a big spend in January, the expectation would have been a continuation of form.

However, after eight players joined the club in the winter, following the large influx in the summer, it could take some time for them to gel.

Potter has called for his players to be given time to settle in at the club.

Some, though, are not as calm as Potter seems faced with this poor run. Indeed, former Blues man Green feels the situation has gotten out of hand.

“With the amount of players there, it’s an unmanageable situation,” he said on the Monday Night Club.

“Once the crowd turns, it starts to get ugly and the players get affected and go into their shells.

“You can already see it from the players, from an attacking perspective and then it gets harder.”

Indeed, that it looks unmanageable from the perspective of somebody who has been at the club does not bode well for Potter. If that’s seen from the outside, it might not be long before the chairman sees it too, despite his current faith.

Of course, despite now having a lot of talent at his disposal, there are drawbacks to Potter having such a big squad at Chelsea. He can’t have his side playing the exact same football as before, as the new players might not respond well to that.

And given some of the January signings were massive ones – Enzo Fernandez and Mykhaylo Mudryk particularly – he’ll want to cater to them.

It wouldn’t be an easy situation for a new manager to head into either. It seems there might simply be too many players to make things work.

As such, Chelsea are stuck between a rock and a hard place and will want to figure things out soon. While it might not be an easy task for a new boss, Potter could be in danger if the wins don’t start coming.
