Ederson dismisses Haaland ‘lie’ as Man City striker has ‘two transfer options on the table’

Man City striker Erling Haaland puts his hands on his head

Man City goalkeeper Ederson insists it is a “lie” to suggest that “most of the goals” Erling Haaland scores for the Citizens “are easy”.

The Norway international signed for City in the summer transfer window from Borussia Dortmund after months of speculation over where he could end up.

And he has hit the ground running at the Etihad Stadium with Haaland scoring 32 goals in 31 matches in all competitions this term.

However, there have been questions about his suitability for Man City with former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher recently saying he felt Haaland “wasn’t the perfect fit” at City.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola responded to Carragher’s claims last week, he said: “I understand it. I am open to all opinions. He has his argument but it is important that he feels so happy here.

“His commitment – not because he’s scored 26 goals – is incredibly well respected. It was a surprise for all of us – a really big surprise.

“We didn’t know him. We knew his stats, his numbers when he played in Dortmund, but we are – all of us – really surprised.

Haaland has become one of the most devastating finishers in world football but Man City team-mate Ederson thinks suggestions that he only scores “easy” goals are harsh.

Ederson told UEFA’s official website: “When he arrived, we said he was going to score a lot – and that’s been happening. He is a brilliant goalscorer, he always looks to score and help the team.

“He is the striker we needed, because in comparison to Gabriel [Jesus], they are different players: Gabi likes to come in from out wide, he is stronger and more versatile; Haaland plays more centrally, looking to get into the box, he is a target in the area.

“That has been the major difference. When you get into the final third you have someone who will always be in the area.

“Many people say most of the goals he scores are easy – but that is a lie. It’s his positioning – that’s his best ability. He doesn’t score easy goals; he positions himself very well. I hope he continues to score many goals, making us happy and we’ll keep working together for all the titles.”
