STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC obtained its first victory of the preseason after defeating Georgia State University 2-1 this Saturday afternoon. Goals from Pedro Fonseca and Kazaiah Sterling led Tormenta FC to its first two goals of the preseason campaign. New additions, Matheus Cassini and Jackson Khoury, received their first few minutes of action with Tormenta FC today.
In a very intense first half, both sides were able to create danger on the offense multiple times, but Tormenta FC had the opportunity to go up early in the match; however, the shot went just wide of the keeper.
In one of Mukwelle Akale’s runs through the right side of the pitch, the ball was crossed into the area finding a trialist, who flicked the ball, finding Pedro Fonseca in the middle of the penalty box. Fonseca placed the ball out of the keeper’s reach, scoring his first goal for South Georgia and the first goal for Tormenta FC in 2023.
The second half saw Tormenta FC regain possession of the ball and remain dangerous offensively. Sterling was able to bag his first goal of the preseason after a ball was recovered by Fonseca. The Brazlian played it out wide to Akale, who unselfishly played the ball into Sterling’s path, where he simply tapped the ball into the bottom of the net.
Georgia State found its lone goal of the night after a powerful strike beat TJ Bush in the 80th minute.
Tormenta FC is set to take on the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the USL Championship next Saturday, Feb. 25, at 3 p.m. ET from Optim Sports Medicine Field at Tormenta Stadium. The link to purchase tickets to the preseason friendly is linked below.
