San Antonio FC Brings Back Cristian Parano for 2023 Season

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC has signed goalkeeper Carlos Mercado, pending league and federation approval, the team announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are excited to welcome Carlos back to the team,” said head coach Alen Marcina. “He is a great culture fit with a complete understanding of the team identity. Carlos possesses the ideal mindset, high-quality skillset and significant potential. As a staff, we are pleased with our goalkeeping unit.”


Mercado played college soccer at the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, and earned a spot with SAFC in 2020 after impressing during the preseason. Prior to 2020, Mercado was a part of the FC Dallas academy, and earned call-ups to the Mexican Youth U-18 National Team as well as the United States Youth U-16 National Team.

Mercado made his San Antonio FC debut in October of 2021, coming off the bench to play 29 minutes and preserve a shutout in a 3-0 win.

San Antonio FC kicks off the USL Championship Title defense on March 11, opening the season at home against Oakland Roots SC. Kickoff from Toyota Field is set for 7:30 p.m. CT, with tickets available now at SanAntonioFC.com or the SAFC app.

The 2023 SAFC roster currently stands as follows, with more moves to be announced in the coming weeks:

Goalkeepers (2) – Jordan Farr, Carlos Mercado

Defenders (6) – Fabien Garcia, Shannon Gomez, Connor Maloney, Carter Manley, Mitchell Taintor, Juan Carlos Azocar

Midfielders (5) – Mohammed Abu, Victor “PC” Giro, David Loera, Niko Hansen, Cristian Parano

Forwards (3) – Ignacio Bailone, Justin Dhillon, Kimarni Smith
