Newcastle United target Daichi Kamada is likely to make a decision on his future ‘later this year,’ according to Twitter transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.
The Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder is set to be out of contract at the end of the season after refusing to pen an extension.
Several top European clubs have registered an interest in Kamada, so Newcastle are set to face competition for his signature.
It is believed that Magpies boss Eddie Howe sees the Japan international as the ideal replacement for Jonjo Shelvey, who joined Nottingham Forest in January.
Newcastle have been absolutely flying lately, currently sitting in fourth place in the Premier League table after winning 10 of their 22 opening matches.
This gives Howe’s team a great chance of qualifying for the Champions League, but the English coach knows that he must bolster his squad if they want to consistently compete at the highest level.
Kamada certainly fits this description, after impressing in the Bundesliga for several years.
Since joining Frankfurt in 2017, he has been one of the German club’s most consistent performers. Operating generally from a central midfield position, Kamada has scored 18 goals in 118 appearances.
Last season, the 26-year-old was a key player as Frankfurt lifted their first European trophy since 1980, by winning the Europa League.
With that in mind, Kamada could certainly bring a winning mentality to the Newcastle dressing room, as Howe looks to bring success to St. James’ Park.
According to Romano, Kamada has a number of admirers waiting to snap him up, but he won’t rush into choosing his next club.
“Daichi Kamada’s contract expires in June, this is why there are many clubs linked and interested.
“Nothing is advanced or decided yet, there are clubs in England, Italy and Germany keeping an eye on him. But the feeling is the decision will be made later this year.”
The Japanese midfielder has been in fine form once again this season, nothing 12 goal contributions in 18 Bundesliga appearances.
He is also versatile, with the ability to play as a defensive, central or attacking midfielder. With that in mind, Kamada could fill in for Shelvey, while also providing cover for the likes of Bruno Guimaeres and Sean Longstaff.
For now, though, Howe will have to rely upon the players already at his disposal, as he looks to secure a spot in the top four.
