Cruz Azul fires head coach Raul 'Potro' Gutierrez

Cruz Azul has parted ways with head coach Raul ‘Potro’ Gutierrez, effective immediately.

His exit comes after the 3-1 defeat to Toluca, culminating in a string of negative results.

Cruz Azul currently sits in 17th place on the Liga MX table with just one point, after managing four defeats and one draw to record their worst start to a campaign in 18 years. La Maquina stands as one of three teams without a victory in the 2023 Clausura, joining Queretaro and Mazatlan.

“The Board of Directors of the Cruz Azul Soccer Club informs that according to the results obtained in the last matches, the decision was made to dismiss the technical director Raul Erasto Gutierrez Jacobo,” read a press release.

Potro Gutierrez initially joined Cruz Azul amid the 2022 Apertura as a temporary solution, following the firing of Diego Aguirre. He originally served as the club’s Under 20 coach, before being promoted on an interim basis as the club searched for a permanent replacement. But his results were enough to initially convince Cruz Azul owners.

He signed a contract extension with the Liga MX side through December 31 2023, transitioning from interim manager to head coach. But now the team will begin their search for a new figure.

Ricardo ‘Tuca’ Ferreti, José Manuel ‘Chepo’ de la Torre, Jaime Lozano and Antonio Mohamed have been linked as possible replacements for Raul Gutierrez.

The team has a little over a week to find a temporary solution, returning to the pitch on February 22 to host Atlas at the Estadio Azteca.
