Man Utd transfer ‘takes two giant leaps forward’ but Arsenal ‘admire’ striker valued ‘higher’ than £50m

Man Utd are interested in signing Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez and their pursuit of him has now ‘taken two giant leaps forward’, according to reports.

It is well-known that Man Utd are in the market for a new striker heading into the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have progressed this season under Erik ten Hag but they are short up front. Marcus Rashford has been in stunning form but he has been operated on the flanks.

Wout Weghorst has played up top in recent weeks but the loanee is not expected to remain at the club long-term. Anthony Martial meanwhile has been hampered by injuries this term and he is being linked with a move elsewhere.

Man Utd have been linked with Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen. A move for the Tottenham star looks unlikely at the moment with it being reported that he is keen to remain at the London club beyond the end of his current contract in 2024.

A move for Osimhen would be very expensive with it suggested that he could cost as much as £133m this summer. They would also face intense competition with clubs around Europe interested in the in-form Napoli star.

United would be wise to consider other targets and TEAMtalk are reporting that Martinez ‘figures highly on the wanted lists’ of Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal.

The three Premier League clubs are ‘ready to battle it out’ to sign the forward, but Man Utd’s ‘raid’ for the Inter man has ‘taken two giant leaps forward’. His teammate – Denzel Dumfries – is also being linked with the Premier League.

‘Martinez would generate a far higher fee than the roughly £40m-£50m Dumfries is valued at and his sale alone would be the biggest help to their financial cause’.

Arsenal have ‘long-term interest’ in Martinez as it is understood that Mikel Arteta is a ‘big admirer’ of him.

He is ‘keen to play in the Premier League’ and the report adds that two ‘giant leaps forward’ come via the ‘player being open to a move and Inter being under pressure to cash in’. This is said to be making a deal ‘increasingly there for the making’.

Speaking last year, ex-Arsenal attacker Kevin Campbell urged his former club to sign Martinez.

“Martinez is a finisher, that is what he is,” Campbell said.

“Let’s be honest, Arsenal have played the season without a lethal striker. [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang went off the boil, [Alexandre] Lacazette went off the boil and [Eddie] Nketiah isn’t the answer.

“They have been relying on [Bukayo] Saka,…
