Michelle Cooper: Blue Devil of the Month

Duke soccer star Michelle Cooper capped off her college career this month by winning the 2022 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy and being selected No. 2 overall in the National Women’s Soccer League Draft

The MAC Hermann Trophy, a 10-pound crystal soccer ball, goes to the national player of the year as voted on by the United Soccer Coaches members. Cooper became the first Duke women’s player to earn the Hermann since it was founded in 1967.

The Duke men’s program has had seven Hermann winners over the years, and midfielder Peter Stroud from this year’s Blue Devil squad joined Cooper at the MAC banquet in St. Louis as a 2022 men’s finalist.

Cooper, a sophomore who has opted to forego her remaining college eligibility to turn pro, was one of the most dynamic offensive players in the nation with 19 goals and 11 assists this past fall. She was one of only two players in Division I to collect at least 10 goals and at least 10 assists. She scored or assisted on 10 game-winning goals in leading the Blue Devils to a 15-5-3 record and a trip to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. Cooper posted six of her 19 goals in NCAA tourney action.

A few days after the MAC banquet, the Kansas City Current selected Cooper with the No. 2 pick of the NWSL Draft, making her the highest Duke women’s soccer player taken in a professional draft. She became Duke’s fifth first-round pick, all of which have come in the last seven years.
