Guardiola Wants Man City to Move On After Controversial Derby Equaliser

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wouldnt be drawn into discussing Manchester United’s controversial first goal in Saturday’s 2-1 derby loss.

Bruno Fernandes equalized for United in the 78th minute when he swept home a pass from Casemiro which had been intended for the offside Marcus Rashford.

Rashford lingered over the ball but did not touch it, before Fernandes fired in his shot. The referees allowed the goal, deeming Rashford hadnt interfered with play.

That decision was hugely contentious given his presence likely impacted the City defenders and goalkeeper Ederson but Guardiola was keen to look forward.

“I said to the players, ‘don’t waste energy thinking what happened. Focus on Spurs’,” Guardiola said, referring to City’s next league game against Tottenham.

“I would not say we win or lose for this action. Of course, it was involved, an important one.

“But wasting energy thinking about what happened in the past, you are in the next game.

“The best thing to do is analyse the things we have done good, what we can improve and then focus on Spurs. Now it is done. It is gone.”

The Spaniard did elaborate a little more, hinting that Rashford’s position had impacted his players.

“Rashford’s offside, Bruno Fernandes no, intervene Rashford or not, distract our keeper and distract our central defenders,” he said.

The result means City remain five points behind leaders Arsenal who face Tottenham on Sunday. United move within one point of City in third.
