The 2023 Supercopa de Espana final will be contested by Real Madrid and Barcelona, and it won’t be the first time El Clasico has taken place in the competition.
The Spanish Super Cup has undergone a huge number of changes over the years, with the format being altered on multiple occasions, but one constant that has remained has been the presence of the nation’s two biggest clubs.
Since 2020, they’ve had to win a semi-final first to get the chance to play to lift the trophy, and both managed to do this year with Real Madrid beating Valencia on penalties and Barcelona beating Real Betis in a shootout.
As a result, they’ll face one another in the final – here’s how such clashes have panned out in the past.
The Supercopa has been in existence since 1982 and Spain’s two giants are unsurprisingly the most successful teams with Barcelona lifting the trophy 13 times and Real Madrid on 12 occasions.
The competition first pitted the two rivals against each other in 1988, and Real Madrid won that two-legged final 3-2 before prevailing again two years later.
Los Blancos dominated the clashes between the two in the tournament for the remainder of the 1990s, winning 4-2 on aggregate in 1993 and 5-3 on aggregate in 1997.
The two then didn’t battle it out on that particular stage again until 2011, when Barcelona finally beat their rivals 5-4 after two thrilling encounters.
Real Madrid avenged that defeat the following year, winning on away goals, before claiming victory much more comfortably when they next met in 2017, beating Barça 5-1.
Following the expansion of the tournament from two to four teams, the sides then met in the semi-finals last year and a single leg ended 3-2 to Karim Benzema and co with Federico Valverde scoring the winning goal in extra time.
