Felipe Abreu Announces Retirement – OurSports Central

Sosa Named Offensive Player of the Month

January 11, 2023 – Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)Kansas City Comets News Release

Kansas City Comets forward Felipe Abreu has announced his retirement from professional indoor soccer.

A native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Abreu was part of the Fluminense FC Academy and played collegiately at MidAmerica Nazarene, helping the Pioneers to finish as the runners-up in the 2015 NAIA National Tournament. Abreu signed with the Comets in 2021.

“Playing with the Comets was one of the best things I’ve done in my life,” Abreu said. “Every little boy in Brazil grows up wanting to become a professional soccer player. Knowing that I got that opportunity is something I will always be proud of.”

Across parts of three seasons, Abreu tallied a goal and two assists in 11 games. Abreu scored his first career MASL goal earlier this season in a 5-3 loss to the Mesquite Outlaws.

With the Comets, Abreu was a Ron Newman Cup semifinalist for two straight years and Central Division champion in 2022.

“Felipe has been a great teammate on and off the field since the day he showed up,” said Comets managing partner Brian Budzinski. “While we will miss his presence in the locker room, we are super excited for his expanded front office role with the Legends Soccer Club.”

While Abreu will no longer be playing for the Comets, he plans on being a big Comets supporter and continuing his coaching endeavors with KC Legends Soccer Club.
