The draw for the fourth round of the FA Cup has been made, and it’s produced some potentially huge matches.
It is, of course, always a thrill to see the biggest and best teams in the country go head to head at Wembley in the final rounds of the tournament, but equally, when watching the draw, there’s always a part of you hoping it pits two against each other earlier on.
This year, if the final third round matches go as expected, it will have done just that. These are the biggest fourth round ties.
Manchester City vs Oxford United or Arsenal
Undoubtedly the biggest match of the round if Arsenal can get past Oxford will be their clash with Premier League title rivals Man City.
The two sides occupy the top two spots in the league and have been the two best teams in the country for the entirety of the 2022/23 season. Given their title fight, the FA Cup may not be a priority for either, but both will be keen to get one over their biggest competitor.
We might not be treated to such a spectacle with it being possible that Oxford knock out the Gunners, but we’d put money on the match happening and money on it being a good one too.
Brighton vs Liverpool or Wolves
The only fourth round match guaranteed to consist of two Premier League sides is the one that will take place at the Amex.
Brighton made it through in style, winning 5-1 at Middlesbrough, and look to be clicking under Roberto De Zerbi with three wins and 16 goals in their last four matches. The same can be said about Wolves under Julen Lopetegui, while Liverpool will be more motivated than ever to embark on a cup run given their struggles in the league.
Whether it’s Wolves or Liverpool that prevail in their replay following their 2-2 draw at Anfield, the match in Brighton looks set to be one that could go either way and produce a lot of goals.
Manchester United vs Reading
At face value, the match between Man Utd and Reading doesn’t seem a particularly interesting one – a top Premier League side against a mid-table Championship one – but the identity of the latter’s club manager changes that.
Paul Ince is a United legend, playing for the club 281 times over a period of six years, playing a huge part in their multiple Premier League and FA Cup triumphs in that time.
Since hanging up his boots and becoming a manager, he’s only faced his former club on two occasions, losing both matches, but now has the chance to make a happier return to Old Trafford.
