Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe bemoaned his side’s inability to be clinical in front of goal after slumping to a 2-1 FA Cup upset against third tier Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

The result bundles the Magpies out of the FA Cup in the third round, like they did 12 months ago against lowly Cambridge United. Newcastle have only got past the fourth round in the FA Cup once in the past 16 years.

Josh Windass scored twice early in the second half, before Bruno Guimaraes pulled one back in the 69th minute but it proved consolation.

“We created enough chances to win the tie and their goalkeeper made a number of great saves but we weren’t clinical enough when those presentable opportunities were there,” Howe told BBC Sport.

“We have to accept the defeat and Sheffield Wednesday battled for everything, as we did, but it wasn’t to be.”

The loss was Newcastle’s first since going down to Liverpool 2-1 in the league on August 31.

“We haven’t experienced defeat a lot this season and it’s very painful, you don’t want to lose any game,” Howe said.

The Magpies are third in the Premier League with 35 points from 18 games.

Newcastle are also due to face Leicester City in the EFL Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday.
