Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher says claims that Man Utd were five years away from Jurgen Klopp’s side in 2021 were “absolute nonsense”.
The Red Devils and Fulham are the only two sides to have won all their Premier League matches since the World Cup break and Erik ten Hag’s outfit now find themselves in four position.
Man Utd are level on points with third-placed Newcastle and have a game in hand on Eddie Howe’s men, while they are now four points behind Man City and nine adrift of leaders Arsenal.
They are also seven points ahead of arch-rivals Liverpool, who are currently sixth, despite Klopp’s men finishing 34 points ahead of Man Utd last term.
But Carragher thinks most of the big clubs can catch up with one another if they make the right signings and hire the right manager.
“Last season when United had the awful result against Liverpool [a 5-0 defeat at Old Trafford], there was a lot of talk after it saying ‘United are five years away from City and Liverpool.’ People were even saying longer. It just shows that this is absolute nonsense,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“A top club, with the right manager. If you add two or three players to what you’ve got, you’re nowhere near as far away as people think… supporters get ups and downs.
“You think of those games last season and talk off the back of them on Man United, it was never going to take the club five years to get back to where they belong.”
It looks likely to be a race between Arsenal and Man City for the title, with Man Utd creeping into the mix, but Carragher has highlighted a big “difference” between the benches.
“There was criticism of Arsenal the other night [against Newcastle] about having nothing from the bench to change the game,” Carragher added on Sky Sports. “That is the big difference when you look at Manchester City.
“The difference between this [the Man City bench] and what we saw at Arsenal was huge in terms of the quality they can bring off the bench. That’s the reason City beat Chelsea.”
Match of the Day pundit and former Arsenal striker Ian Wright is sure the Gunners will be looking to strengthen, he told BBC Sport: “It is something I am sure they are looking at.
“It was a like-for-like substitution when you are looking to nick a win and go 10 points clear.
“You can’t take anything away from them at the moment – they still played well, they attacked and did well – but Newcastle have to get credit for the way…
