Arteta hits out at officials after Arsenal had ‘two scandalous penalties’ waved away in Newcastle draw

Mikel Arteta has hit out at the officials in charge of Arsenal’s draw vs Newcastle as he has argued that his side should have been given two penalties.

The Gunners would have gone ten points clear at the top of the Premier League with a win on Tuesday night.

They made a bright start but they faded as the game went on and they struggled to break down a dogged Newcastle side.

Arsenal and their opponents shared the points in a goalless draw and this was arguably a fair result in the end.

Arteta was left fuming at the officials post-match as he felt that his side should have been awarded two penalties. One for an apparent foul by Dan Burn on Gabriel and the other for a handball by Jacob Murphy.

The Gunners boss thinks the two penalties decisions were “very simple” but he is “so proud” of his players.

“I think we lacked an extra touch or movement to finish these chances in this game.

“Newcastle wanted to set-up like this. It is not the way they play. They have not set-up like this against anyone else.

“When you cannot win you cannot lose and we kept a clean sheet and had a really good performance. Now we go again. I wanted to win the game are we drew it. We should have done some things better in the final third and we should have had two penalties to win the game.”

On his options from the bench and transfers: “We had what we had. We have some injuries as well and attacking areas we don’t have that many options but it is what it is. That’s something we always try to do to improve our team and every window is important.”

Man City will close in to within five points of Arsenal if they beat Chelsea on Thursday night.

Newcastle meanwhile are nine points adrift of Arsenal having played a game more. They are now level on points with Man Utd after they beat AFC Bournemouth 3-0.

Eddie Howe stated post-match that his side had to be “really solid” to come away from Arsenal with a point.

“I thought we were resilient, dogged, brilliantly defending all areas of the pitch collectively. We managed the game well, a lot to like – maybe not…
