Newcastle among Premier League trio who ‘should be all over’ Maguire transfer after Ten Hag ‘lie’

Newcastle United have been told that they should sign Harry Maguire from Man Utd this month if he becomes available for a transfer.

Maguire finds himself in a tough position at United as he is clearly not fancied by Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman selected Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez over him before the World Cup break.

The Englishman recovered from injury in time to make an impact in Qatar and he was one of Gareth Southgate’s better players.

He is now back to square one though as Ten Hag’s thoughts on him have seemingly not changed since the World Cup.

Maguire was not involved against Burnley in the Carabao Cup and he has since made brief cameo appearances off the bench against Nottm Forest and Wolves.

Ten Hag claimed before the Burnley game that Maguire’s absence was due to illness. But ex-United player Paul Parker has suggested that this was a “lie” as the manager simply prefers to have Luke Shaw at centre-back.

Tony Cascarino thinks Maguire will now be thinking that he must leave Man Utd.

“They’ve won the game so it’s not been an issue. For Harry Maguire, he will only be thinking about how he’s so far down the pecking order.”

The pundit added that Maguire leaving United this month is “more likely” if it is a loan deal.

“I think it will be very difficult to get Harry Maguire out. If it’s a loan it is more likely,” Cascarino added.

“At the end of the season, Maguire will look elsewhere. He’s playing for England and wants to be a regular.

“Varane played in the quarter-finals of the World Cup and went deeper. He [Maguire] will be thinking ‘well he’s playing, it’s not a World Cup reason. I’ve been left out and Luke Shaw is in front of me’.

“I think Harry will have to consider his future at Old Trafford. He will be incredibly disappointed.

“If Ten Hag is still the manager next summer then I don’t think he will want to stay.”

Stuart Pearce meanwhile thinks that West Ham, Newcastle and Aston Villa should sign Maguire if he is free to join a new club.

“If I was West Ham, if I was Newcastle, if I was Aston Villa, I’d be all over trying to get Harry…
