Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is looking to make January signings ‘as quick as possible’ in preparation for a tough Premier League title race.

The Gunners have made a brilliant start to the season and currently sit five points clear at the top of the table, but concerns have been raised over their squad depth as the season progresses, particularly after star striker Gabriel Jesus picked up a knee injury at the World Cup.

They have been heavily linked with a move for Shkahtar Donetsk forward Mykhalo Mudryk, but may need to bring in more reinforcements if they are to continue to challenge for trophies.

Arteta has been keen to stress the importance of strengthening his squad as soon as possible. Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Boxing Day clash with West Ham, he said: ‘We knew the importance of getting players early in the summer and that is the same we want to do in January.

‘This is idealistic. Sometimes it is not realistic. But obviously, if you ask my opinion, [we need players] as quick as possible, we want the players in to get settled.

‘We can get a striker I can guarantee you that. But what we can not afford to do is get a player here that is not for us.

‘We don’t need a body, we need players that make the team better. I think personalities that have the mentality that we want to win.
