Atlanta United sign veteran goalkeeper Quentin Westberg via free agency

Atlanta United have bolstered their goalkeeping options with the signing of Quentin Westberg via free agency, the club announced Friday.

Westberg has signed a one-year contract, keeping him at Mercedes-Benz Stadium through the 2023 MLS season.

“Quentin is a proven goalkeeper in MLS and Europe, and we are excited to welcome him to Atlanta,” Atlanta United vice president and technical director Carlos Bocanegra said in a club press release. “We wanted to strengthen our depth at the goalkeeper position this offseason and Quentin will be a great addition to our group.”

Westberg arrives in Atlanta following a three-year spell with Toronto FC, where he made 79 appearances across all competitions, winning one Canadian Championship and reaching the MLS Cup Final in 2019 before losing 3-1 to the Seattle Sounders.

Prior to arriving in MLS, Westberg spent 13 years playing in Europe, mostly in France with the likes of Auxerre and Tours, but also in Norway with Sarpsborg 09.

The 36-year-old was born and raised in France but qualified for the United States at international level through his father, going on to make 16 appearances for the Stars and Stripes at U-20 level.

Westberg joins fellow veteran Brad Guzan and 22-year-old Justin Garces on Atlanta United’s goalkeeping depth chart.
